The Pause: 07
“Just because I didn’t react doesn’t mean I didn’t notice.”
I’ve realized that people sometimes mistake my silence for ignorance.
They think because I didn’t question something when I first noticed it, I didn’t notice it.
That’s not usually what happened.
Sometimes I’m listening.
Sometimes I’m watching how the pieces connect.
Sometimes I’m giving someone the opportunity to reveal more than they realize they’re revealing.
And sometimes I simply don’t care enough to interrupt the moment.
But don’t confuse my lack of reaction with a lack of awareness.
I notice little things.
Tone.
Timing.
The question that comes a little too quickly.
The detail someone knows that I never told them.
The confidence someone has about a story that isn’t even true.
The sudden change in subject.
The contradiction that doesn’t quite fit.
I may not say anything in that moment, but I file it away.
Not because I’m looking for something to be wrong.
Not because I want to assume the worst.
I’ve learned that awareness and suspicion aren’t the same thing.
Sometimes you notice something, sit with it, and let time tell you what it means.
Because one strange moment can be a misunderstanding.
But when enough little things start connecting, you don’t have to force an explanation.
Eventually, the pattern speaks for itself.
And I’ve stopped feeling like I have to confront every detail I notice just to prove that I noticed it.
Sometimes noticing is enough.
Sometimes the most powerful thing I can do is remain quiet, keep moving, and watch what happens next.
I trust myself to notice without needing to announce that I noticed.
Because I don’t need to react to everything I see.
I just need to be honest with myself about what I saw.
That’s discernment.
Not paranoia.
Not assumption.
Just awareness.
And I’ve learned to trust mine.
